Club for Five at the April Jazz 27/04/2018

Club For Five is one of Finland’s most prominent a cappella groups. It is known for its lively performances and open-minded approach to singing – sometimes even challenging conventional wisdom about the capabilities of the human voice. Rooted in Nordic music tradition but strongly influenced by jazz and pop the music of five skilled vocalists is full of colors and delightful energy. At April Jazz the group will be accompanied for the first time with their new live band.

Trio F#

Having settled in Finland in the 1990s, German-born pianist Sid Hille has established himself as a versatile composer and strong bandleader of several notable outfits, such as the jazz band Platypus Ensemble. Trio F# is Hille’s brand new, stellar group whose stage debut will take place, excitingly, in Pori. With Hille’s compositions providing a springboard for free improvisation, the group bears a slight stylistic resemblance to EST, the late pianist Esbjörn Svensson’s trio, while perhaps moving in somewhat more electric spheres.

BRO on tour in October

As part of its 40th anniversary year, the UMO Jazz Orchestra will perform at Helsinki Festival’s Huvila Tent (19.8.2015) along with Hermeto Pascoal and his trusted friend, composer and bassist Itiberê Zwarg.
The Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, who is sometimes referred to as a magician, lives and breathes music: he plays keyboards, the button accordion, melodica, saxophones, guitars, flutes and different folk instruments. Anything can be used as instruments, including dishes, toys and even the man’s own beard.

A live recording of UMO and sax legend Michael Brecker called “Live in Helsinki 1995″ is set for release this coming fall. A record release concert will be held on Friday 18th September at Savoy Theater in Helsinki. The concert will feature tenor saxophonist Manuel Dunkel.

Cuban-American clarinet player, saxophonist, composer and conductor Paquito D’Rivera visits UMO after 27 years! Multiple Grammy Awards winner will write an original piece for this concert, in memory of the late Esko Linnavalli, the founder of UMO Jazz Orchestra.

Gregory Porter is without a doubt one of the hottest jazz vocalists around right now. In March 2015 he’ll join UMO on Helsinki Hall of Culture stage as the orchestra celebrates its 40th year.

Drum intro to Lenny Pickett's Big Wiggle.

The legendary tenor saxophonist and composer Lenny Pickett (Tower of Power, Conductor of Saturday Night Live Show) recorded an album with Umo Jazz Orchestra. It was released 6th of July in U.S. I'm really happy to be part of this project and I think this CD is simply the best that Umo has ever made.

“The way the musicians in UMO Jazz Orchestra enveloped my music was a lovely embrace of the concepts I had in my compositions. That was the payoff. They lent their expertise to my imagination. They had a fondness for all the different styles and genres of music and didn’t want to pigeonhole jazz. That made this all worth the effort”, Pickett defines.

My first solo album TILA will be released digitally in April. It will be available in iTunes, Spotify, Amazon etc.
